Abstract

We study a multilevel preconditioner for the linear system arising from a mixed finite element approximation of a second order anisotropic elliptic problem on uniform rectangular and triangular meshes. This preconditioner involves smoothing on the mixed problem and the preconditioning of an auxiliary problem, namely the corresponding finite element problem on the same mesh.
